The Language Project, Bristol: Learn English and learn about British places, people and culture

Learn About Britain

Home Page   |   Site Map
These pages give useful information about Britain, its people, its famous places and the unique way of life.

When you learn English, you usually learn all about grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation in your lessons. If you are lucky you can study in the UK or another country where they speak English.

But to successfully communicate in English, it's useful to know about famous British people (both past and present), about major British cities and about British culture.

You can probably find this information in books and on other websites. But this is the only website that tells you about a lot of different areas and is in easy English.
Learn About Britain and British Culture

British People; Present and Past

There are many famous English people that everybody in England knows about. They often talk about them and expect the listener to know about them too. That's why it is useful for you to know about these people.

We've written about the most famous people from the past. You can find out about Oliver Cromwell, William Shakespeare and King Cannute. We've also got some pages about current celebrities, the people actually making news in 2006.

There are also a few pages about some of the most famous characters from stories, books and television that are popular today. So you can find out about Winnie The Pooh, Peter Rabbit and of course Harry Potter.

Visit the people page for a complete list of pages about famous people from the UK.

British Places; Cities and Sights

These are the most famous places in the country. English school children learn about the cities and and areas of natural beauty as part of their studies. They also go on school trips to the museums and monuments. Even if you are lucky and can visit or study in the UK, you will not have time to visit all of these places.

We have included pages about the most famous cities like London, Bristol, Cardiff and Edinburgh. We have also included some of the best known tourist attractions like Stone Henge and areas of natural beauty like The Cotswolds and The Lake District.

Visit the places page for a complete list of pages about famous places in the UK.

British Customs; Culture and Traditions

What do British people eat at Christmas ..or for breakfast? What do British people like to do in their spare time? Do British people really talk about the weather to complete strangers? You can find the answers to these and more questions.

Read all about rain in Britain (there's lots of it), the new British national dish (not fish & chips) and the British passion for bacon.

Visit the customs page for a complete list of pages about the British way of life.

Easy English; So You Can Understand

We have written all of our information pages in intermediate-level English. This means that if you have studied English for about 100 hours, you will be able to read and understand most things.

To make the English easy to understand we only use the grammar patterns that you already know.
